Square hardware

Square Reader

Reader is the lightest way into Square hardware: pair it with iOS or Android and take tap and chip without a full terminal. It is the right tool for pop-ups and house calls, not a Friday-night restaurant. Omega will tell you when you have outgrown it.

  • Pairs with iOS 16+ or Android 9+
  • Contactless and chip
  • Not a Friday-night restaurant kit

Overview

Why operators pick Square Reader

Square Reader for contactless and chip is the small Bluetooth reader for markets, appointments, and anyone who sells from a phone or tablet.

Reader is the lightest Square hardware: a Bluetooth tap-and-chip reader that pairs with the phone or tablet you already carry. It is right for markets, house calls, and overflow. Omega will tell you when you have outgrown it.

Often strongest for

  • Markets & pop-ups
  • Mobile services
  • Appointments on-site
  • Side counters
  • Backup device
  • Bluetooth reader for tap and chip; pairs with iOS 16+ or Android 9+
  • Contactless wallets and chip cards without a full terminal
  • USB-C charging; designed to live in a bag or apron pocket

Built for how you actually sell

Square sets the product. Omega maps it to your floor, volume, and whether Clover or another system is still the better fit.

Pair it and take tap and chip. Omega uses Reader for pop-ups, appointments on-site, and as a backup, not as the only device in a packed dining room.

Services

Chairside and job-site collection

Appointments and invoices often close on a Reader or Tap to Pay. We set that flow so guests are not walked to a back office.

  • Markets and pop-ups
  • Mobile beauty and field techs
  • Side counter overflow
Square Terminal as the usual upgrade from Reader

Upgrade

When Reader is no longer enough

If you need a dedicated screen, a printer, or staff who should not use personal phones, step to Terminal or Handheld. We will say that before you buy a third dongle.

  • Tap to Pay can be enough for wallets-only
  • Reader adds chip
  • Hardware priced by Square

What you get with Omega

A partner who still picks up the phone. We help you choose Square, Clover, or another system we already offer, then stay through onboarding.

Start here, then graduate

Many merchants begin on Reader and later add Terminal or Register when volume or staffing needs a dedicated screen. Omega treats Reader as a real product, not a toy, and we will say when a Handheld or Terminal will save you more time than another dongle.

Tap to Pay as a companion

Square also supports Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android with no extra reader. Reader still matters when you want chip fallback, a dedicated tap target, or a device guests recognize as “the card machine.”

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Square Reader if I have Tap to Pay?
Not always. Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android can take contactless on the phone itself. Reader adds chip (and a dedicated tap surface) when you want hardware guests can see and when chip cards still show up in your mix.
Is this enough for a restaurant?
Rarely as the only device. Full-service and QSR usually need Terminal, Handheld, or Register plus kitchen workflow. Reader is a backup or a patio overflow tool in those shops.
Is this Square device included with processing?
Square publishes its own hardware pricing and software plans. Through Omega’s Square partnership, we help you choose the right device, confirm what is included, and complete onboarding. Do not assume Clover no-cost placement applies to Square.
Can Omega still offer Clover instead?
Yes. Square is an addition, not a replacement. If Clover, Union, a vertical POS, or a simple terminal is the better fit, we will say so and quote that path.
